History

The peregrine falcon has been on this earth, farther back than the ancient egyptians. It used to be a sacred animal to many cultures. The falcon was even mummified by the ancient egyptians becuase they believed the falcon was sacred.

Falconry

Falconry is the training of a bird to hunt. This art was developed by the ancient Chinese and the Persians more than four thousand years ago. Falconry was also used in Europe during the middle ages. In those times, falconry was called "the sport of kings". Due to endangerment of the peregrine falcon, falconry is restricted and illegal.

Conservation

During the mid 1900's, populations of peregrine falcons were crashing due to DDT poisoning. During the beginning of 1970's the peregrine falcon was declared an endangered species. DDT is a substance that was used for killing insects. It was discovered in the year 1939 by Dr. Paul Muller. After those years, the substance was being used more often on land. This substance was very harmful for the crops and even some species of animals, especially the peregrine falcon. Since people found this out, DDT has been banned from all use on crops, which signifigantly raised the number of falcons back to normal. The peregirne alcon was taken of off the Endangered Species List in 1999.
